Church square
The 17th century church was destroyed by fire in 1908. The new church was completed in 1912. This church of National Romanticism designed by the architect Josef Stenbäck is made of granite obtained from the islands and shores of Raahe.
I. The Väänänen house from 1813 is wooden Empire style. The house is balanced in its dimensions. Hipped roof angled building, it beautifully lines the church square.
H. The former house of the old pharmacist’s has been restored to flats. Furthermore, a new backyard building with two flats was built on the plot in 1980, replacing an outbuilding. The part of the main building facing Cortenkatu dates from 1787 and the one facing the church square is from 1820. The exterior of the house carries interesting examples of different periods: the first boarding types date from the beginning of the 19th century, both the vertical staggered boarding and the vertical lathing as well as the closed matchboarding.
The G. The Himanka house with its wide horizontal boarding and rusticated corner and wall pilasters is in the neo-classisistic shape following the period of vertical lath boarding. The influence of the Empire style can also be detected. F. Kirkkokatu 17 has preserved its shape of the beginning of the 19th century. The house still has a vertical lath boarding, one of the oldest types of boarding.
The church square that already existed in the first town plans of Raahe, also gives a versatile picture of the construction of a sea town over the centuries.
